The number of referrals found to be appropriate and assigned to CASA Volunteers jumped 71%, from 75 to 128. By the end of fiscal year 2016, we had served 267 abused and neglected children, more than ever before. Though we are only 8 months into FY 2017, we have already served 251 young victims, so it is likely we will exceed that record this year.

Abused and neglected children suffer from violence, food insecurity, and deeply unhealthy relationships. Without intervention, they can face a lifetime of problems such as improper brain development, impaired learning, and anxiety. They have a higher risk for heart, lung, and liver diseases as well as obesity, cancer, and high blood pressure. They are less likely to obtain gainful employment and more likely to get in trouble with the law.

Piedmont CASA Volunteers provide the kind of intervention these young victims need. They are well trained to assist the court and child welfare system in ensuring safety for maltreated youth, as well as permanency, placement stability, physical health, mental health, and education. Local judges value this work so highly that they refer 100% of child abuse and neglect cases brought before them to Piedmont CASA.

We are not impeded by jurisdictional boundaries, thus able to stay with children throughout the life of a case. This ensures that even when social workers, foster parents, and schools change, CASA Volunteers do not – thus providing important continuity for the child.

Research shows that boys and girls with CASA Volunteers spend less time in foster homes, perform better in school, and find safe, permanent homes faster. These are key to enabling these youngsters to become stable, productive adults.

Total Project Budget: $602,945

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Committed Funding for FY 2018: National CASA, DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice Services), VOCA (Victims of Crime Act), Albemarle County, City of Charlottesville, and Charlottesville Area Community Foundation.
