Now in its 18th year, the AACY\u2019s Caregiving Youth Project has been serving an otherwise hidden and vulnerable population of middle and high school caregivers. These unrecognized youth often sacrifice their education, health, well-being, and childhood to perform adult-sized responsibilities of
\nproviding care for a family member who is chronically ill, injured, elderly or disabled.<\/p>\n
Research shows that 3.4 million youth in the U.S. (Caregiving in the U.S., 2020) and 290,000+ public middle and high school students in Florida alone (FLDOH\/CDC, Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2019) have caregiving responsibilities. This number dwarfs the number of children of all ages who are homeless (95,000) or in foster care (15,000) during this same period. <\/p>\n
Fulfilling their dual role as students and caregivers is compromised by missing school or after school activities, an inability to complete homework, and an increased risk of dropping out of school to care for their care recipient. The Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) was established to identify and support Caregiving Youth by utilizing a three-pronged integrated approach within the systems of healthcare, education, and the community. <\/p>\n
Currently, the CYP works with 614 Caregiving Youth within 44 middle and high schools (through a direct partnership) as well as students who receive support in 22 other schools which lack the in-school component. <\/p>\n
In addition to in-school Skills Building groups, Lunch and Learn sessions, and individual supportive counseling, the AACY Family Specialists conduct home assessments to determine other needs in the home that can strengthen the family and reduce stress on the child. These services include but are not limited to respite, tutoring, mentorship, and special projects. Sponsored activities allow Caregiving Youth to meet peers from other schools and have time to have fun. <\/p>\n
A major outcome of the CYP services over time includes an ten year high school graduation rate of 98.3%, with most going on to post-secondary education or the military.\n<\/p>\n
