Children with autism experience a broad range of challenges with social interaction, communication, and sensory processing, limiting their ability to engage in community life. It is the mission of The Victory Center, a year-round school serving ages 3 to 22, founded in 2000 by a special needs family, to provide outstanding evidence-based educational services to individuals with autism and related disabilities in a caring and nurturing environment to help them achieve their fullest potential. We achieve our mission by offering small student teacher ratios and using the scientific approach of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), both proven effective in teaching this target group.
\nOur proposed project will expand our unique summer program, Camp Victory, to meet the needs of children with intensive needs and severe behavior. Camp Victory is one of our Community Enrichment Programs, crucial to reinforce skills learned during the school period, encouraging family involvement in their child\u2019s intervention approach and meeting the needs of various family members, including caregivers – who face a shortage of respite – and siblings who may have limited access to social and recreational programs due to the intensive needs of their brother or sister with autism.
\nSince most summer day camps are not geared to serve children with autism, this program plays a critical role in the Miami-Dade community in-school educational goals for the 32 pre-K through high school age participants. Parents of children with developmental disabilities, especially those who do not currently access behavioral services, have very few opportunities to access ABA treatment with trained staff in a safe, social setting. Access to appropriate summer programs enables the parents to work or attend to personal matters during the summer months. In addition, few special needs camps serve high school age students with behavioral challenges, and the Miami-Dade public schools currently offer only half days of in-school instruction during July, subject to federal funding.<\/p>\n
