Project Title: Tutoring and Mentorship for At-Risk Youth

The SCC\u2019s mission is to offer a diverse array of services to senior adults, empowering them to leverage their life experiences to meet community needs. The SCC partners with area Title 1 schools to implement the Foster Grandparents Program, annually serving ~500 at-risk elementary students in Richmond and Jefferson counties, 81.1% of whom are minority and 90% of whom qualify as low-income. This program provides thousands of community education hours to students who attend these chronically-failing schools. <\/p>\n
Senior adults serve alongside teachers in classrooms for 20\/hrs per week during the academic year, providing 1:1 and small group academic remediation for vulnerable students. Foster Grandparents serve a vital role in students\u2019 academic progress, more than 90% of whom read below grade level, and in their social-emotional growth through supportive and trusting relationships.<\/p>\n
There is a critical need for the Foster Grandparents Program in our community due to the persistent challenges faced by low-income, at-risk students in Title 1 schools where teachers are often outnumbered by students 30:1. Grant funds will help us continue and expand this vital program by enabling all 45 Foster Grandparents to extend their service day from 4 to 5 hours. This means Hermanowski Family Foundation funding will cover an extra 2500 tutoring and mentoring hours for these students.<\/p>\n
The program has a proven track record of making a lasting impact. In recent years, students participating in the program have shown significant gains in both math and reading, as reflected in their statewide standardized test scores. Beyond academic achievement, students report increased feelings of worthiness, competency, and motivation. In fact, 75% of students involved in the program demonstrate improved skills across these areas.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, an investment from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will help create a more equitable educational experience for students who are struggling both academically and socially.\n<\/p>\n
