The goal of this critical 21-year program is to use the arts as a tool to improve school performance and build self-awareness, life-skills, and community. The program integrates many different subject areas along with field trips to local arts and culture institutions resulting in improved academic performance, leadership skills, self-esteem, and community engagement, helping these at-risk youth transition into middle school, graduate from high school, and lead successful lives. The challenges and needs of youth in the low-income, marginalized Grier Heights community are numerous. Many of the challenges are common to low-income communities, including juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, school dropout, and teenage pregnancy. Structured programs aimed at engaging pre-teens and teens are critical to help youth in this neighborhood to identify and actualize their talents, build life and leadership skills that help them overcome challenges, and achieve improved school performance and long-term success. The Grier Heights program comprises weekly after school sessions held alternately at the Mint and Grier Heights Presbyterian Church, from September-May/June annually. Participants attend field trips to local arts and culture institutions, and participate in engaging educational activities that increase their knowledge of and appreciation for literature, history, art, and other areas. Key programmatic outcomes include: prepare students to succeed in their school environment; produce more educated and informed individuals; equip students with confidence and self-esteem by teaching the skills necessary to succeed in life; broaden their knowledge of arts and different cultures; and discover leaders and learn servant/community leadership skills.

Total Project Budget: $60,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Arts & Science Council, Mint Museum Auxiliary, Provident Benevolent Foundation, Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation,

Project Duration: 1 year
Geographical Area Served: Grier Heights neighborhood in Charlotte, NC
Age Group To Be Served: 8-16

Contact Information

Contact Prefix (Mr,Mrs etc.): Mrs.
Contact First Name: Martha
Contact Last Name: Snell
Contact Title: Grants Manager
Contact Phone: 704-337-2106
Contact Email: martha.snell@mintmuseum.org

Hermanowski Family Foundation Initial Request Form Organization Name: Mint Museum of Art, Inc.
