Reinforcement of skills and year-round learning is particularly valuable for children with disabilities.

Summer camp also serves as a transitional opportunity for incoming SAIL students. Students attending camp become familiar with the facility, policies and staff; as well as meet other SAIL students prior to the start of the school year. This facilitates transition and accelerates adaptation and skill development.

SAIL has operated summer camp since 2004. Scholarships were first provided in 2014 and we saw participation double. Approximately 80% of SAIL students come from families whose income is at or below the federal poverty designation of $24,300 per year for a family of 4.

2015 scholarships exceeded 2014 awards by 8.5% and the average scholarship per student more than doubled. Approximately 25% of campers this year received scholarships. However, we still turned away 20 students due to lack of funds and several students could not afford to continue for the 2nd camp session.

SAIL school year enrollment hovers about 60 students. In an environment where 80% of students come from low and very low income households, we are concerned about where and with whom the other 40 SAIL students spend their summers. Families face leaving children with disabilities home alone so they can work. We\\’re also concerned about students having adequate food without access to free school breakfast and lunches.

Camp provides a nurturing educational and social environment and provides an alternative to youth being on the streets or in their rooms in front of the TV all summer.

Total Project Budget: $85,750

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Family Central – Committed; Lattner Family Foundation – Pending; Bethesda By the Sea – Pending; Scaife Family Foundation – Pending; Asofsky Family Foundation – Pending

Project Duration: June 12-July 29,2017
Geographical Area Served: Boynton Beach to Riviera Beach
Age Group To Be Served: 11-22 years old

Contact Information

Contact Prefix (Mr,Mrs etc.): Ms.
Contact First Name: Linda
Contact Last Name: Moore
Contact Title: COO and SAIL Director
Contact Phone: (561) 540-8110 ext 106
Contact Email: lmoore@seagull.org

Hermanowski Family Foundation Initial Request Form Organization Name: Seagull Industries for the Disabled, Inc.
