Project Title: Capital Partners for Education\u2019s Mentoring and College Success Program
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
By 2020, it is estimated that 76% of jobs in the D.C. area will require a post-secondary degree. Without this credential, low-income students cannot access the high-wage, high-growth jobs that would allow them to break the multi-generational cycle of poverty that exists in their community. CPE serves students from some of the most under-resourced communities in the DC area. The average annual income for a CPE family of four is about $31,000 and approximately 80% of CPE students are first generation to college.<\/p>\n
CPE provides a structured continuum of one-on-one mentoring, academic support and career preparation services to improve the futures of low-income high school and college students. CPE achieves this by helping them obtain a high-quality high school education, so that they can enroll in and graduate from college, and enter a sustainable career. CPE is high-touch based on intensive relationships among our students, mentors, and staff. Mentors commit to a mentoring relationship for two years, and many exceed that requirement. CPE\u2019s program outcomes demonstrate a strong track record of success: Over 97% of CPE students enroll in college, and 70% complete college on time.<\/p>\n
Funds from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation will allow CPE to increase the number of students it serves, and to recruit, train, and strategically match more college-educated, volunteer mentors with these students. These mentors serve as role models and resources for our students, helping them develop the critical academic, career, and life skills needed to be successful in 21st century jobs. Additionally, these funds will allow CPE to provide targeted individualized staff support, college and career readiness workshops, and guidance through the college and the financial aid application processes to an even larger pool of qualified students.\n<\/p>\n
