Project Title: Birth and postpartum doula support for teenage mothers
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Transformed Birth Services (TBS) is determined to decrease maternal health disparities. We provide birth and postpartum community doula support for underserved mothers in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. <\/p>\n
For this project, TBS will collaborate with high school counselors and other local organizations in order to identify pregnant teenage mothers. TBS will help connect these mothers with community resources to help meet their needs. We will also address social determinants of health by ensuring easier access to nutritious food, transportation, and safe housing. A birth doula will help this young mother prepare for labor and delivery, attend the birth with her, bring her a care package (sanitary products, diapers, wipes, food, and lactation products), and check up on her during her postpartum time. If she needs further support, TBS will provide a postpartum doula to help her care for herself and understand how to care of her newborn. Postpartum doulas also keep a special eye on the mother\u2019s mental health and provide further connection to resources if possible. Because the majority of the mothers we work with are low income, TBS helps cover the cost of lactation services, pelvic floor therapy, or perinatal mental health counseling.<\/p>\n
Transformed Birth Services focuses on providing culturally sensitive support and can provide doula services in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Arabic. Our doulas are paid through nonprofit funding so that mothers who could not otherwise afford support have access to such life changing services. In this way we are able improve health outcomes for underserved mothers.<\/p>\n
