Project Title: Nights of Shelter and Days of Care for Children
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
For the Nights of Shelter and Days of Care Program for Children, OLI houses and offers specialized supports for the children of the pregnant women we serve. Our Child Advocate assesses each child\u2019s needs, and a plan of support is developed with the mother to ensure the physical, emotional, behavioral, and social needs of her children are being met.<\/p>\n
Healthy meals, clothing, educational and age-appropriate toys\/activities are offered. All case management support is recorded on each child\u2019s progress documenting challenges, achievement of milestones, and other pertinent data. Staff monitor, educate, and model parenting skills for mothers with appropriate intervention, counseling, education, and support. Mothers attend a weekly parenting class based upon our Family Wellness Program. <\/p>\n
Professional staff meet with new clients within the first 10 business days after clients\u2019 entry into the program, discovering pertinent information related to mother, prenatal child, and all older children. The Child Advocate performs a developmental screening and assessment of needs, they make referrals as necessary and coordinate enrollment into Parents as Teachers, Nurses for Newborns, and available Head Start programs. The Child Advocate assists with enrolling school-age children in a new local school or arranging for transportation to the school of origin, as well as advocating for and educating mothers on how to advocate for their children for IEPs and other educational supports. <\/p>\n
In addition to the work of the Child Advocate, other professional in-house staff work with mothers and their children to identify and address any physical or emotional health needs. When the children enter the home, they are often suffering the same traumatic effects of homelessness and\/or abuse as their mothers. We work with the families to focus on preventing child abuse, by teaching stress coping mechanisms, appropriate methods of discipline and by fostering parent-child bonding. <\/p>\n
