Getting youth prepared for employment sets them on a path toward long-term success. Youth employment and internship programs can reduce youth violent crimes by 35% to 43% and lower mortality rates, Office of Management & Budget, The White House, 2022.
\nBlack youth continue to have the highest unemployment rate, outpacing their counterparts, and are more likely to be disconnected from work and school compared to Latino and White Youth (ASP Current Population Survey, 2021). Thus, MUCP will target 20 Black and Brown Mentees, ages 14 to 21, residing in high-risk communities across Northwest Orlando.
\nApproximately 20% of the population in 32808, 32811, and 32805 live below the poverty line, meaning there are over 11,000 youth under 18 years of age living in poverty. According to the Florida Department of Health, many residents without a high school diploma exist. These areas also account for 57% of total juvenile arrests in Orlando. Studies show poorer youth are at greater risk for poor academic achievement, school dropout, abuse and neglect, behavioral and socioemotional problems, physical health problems, and developmental delays.
\nMUCP is an innovative incentive-based program that provides youth with a career-readiness experience. For 12-months, mentees shadow entrepreneurs and professionals from the local community. MUCP will include employment preparation, project-based literacy tutoring, career exploration, job shadowing, life skills, mentorship, financial literacy, post-secondary planning, and linkage to social services. Given the pilot\u2019s success, we are confident that by the end of the 12-month program, 20 mentees will demonstrate a:
\n\u2022\t20% decline in youth disconnection from workforce or school.
\n\u2022\t50% of students will show 25% or more growth in 21st Century Skills post-assessment.
\n\u2022\t50% of participants will apply to post-secondary opportunities.
\n\u2022\t50% of participants will improve their literacy skills by one-half of a grade level.
\n\u2022\t50% of youth participants will demonstrate measurable progress in financial management<\/p>\n
