Project Title: Youth Scholarships for Year-Round Theater Education Programs
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Diminishing resources continue to reduce the availability of arts education in schools, redefining the role nonprofit organizations must play in fulfilling the need for arts programming. Live Arts\u2014a volunteer-powered producing theater in Charlottesville, Virginia\u2014helps meet this need by presenting innovative classes, workshops, and spring\/summer camp programs that allow students aged 4 to 17 to experience the excitement of theater, including acting, playwriting, script analysis, improvisation, musical theater, movement, design, technical production, and more.<\/p>\n
Studies show these types of programs engage students and expose them to the arts while also:<\/p>\n
– Supporting a well-rounded education
\n– Inspiring creativity and community
\n– Expanding knowledge of literature, language, music, and culture
\n– Introducing theater as an art form
\n– Improving self-confidence
\n– Practicing in community-based problem-solving.<\/p>\n
Live Arts has been a leader in delivering youth education programs for 25 years. Our primary focus is to provide highly immersive, skill-driven camp programs and other educational opportunities throughout the year. Programs like these expand access to the arts; enhance student learning in theater, literature, and music; increase cultural awareness; and help young artists grow into healthy, engaged citizens. <\/p>\n
We will use funding from the Hermanowski Foundation to provide 12-15 need-based scholarships ranging from $200 to $600, depending on the program. In doing so, we will remove financial barriers to participation and empower students with the knowledge that they are valued and deserving. <\/p>\n
To measure project success, we will track the number of enrollments, demographics, and the amount of financial aid requested\/awarded, with a goal of 1) serving 425 youth in FY2025 and 2) reaching a demographic that mirrors our community (35% people of color, US Census 2021). We will also distribute surveys to parents\/guardians and camp staff to identify what the students loved and how we can improve, among other topics. <\/p>\n
