Project Title: Summer Programming
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Reality Changers\u2019 youth programs build first-generation college students by offering tutoring and mentoring resources to support academic achievement, community leadership, and personal growth. Students in the program often begin with GPAs below 2.0, are gang-adjacent, and are disconnected from their community – overall, needing a complex support system to become successful. Students come from neighborhoods characterized with low educational attainment, high crime and twice the amount of high school dropouts. Despite the obstacles the students face, they exit our programs with a 100% high school graduation rate, enroll in college with approximately a 97% rate, and 75% graduate from college in six years or less. Lastly, our students are 7x more likely to graduate than their similar peers. <\/p>\n
The project we propose carries our school year programming into the summer, ensuing thatat least 200 students have access to meaningful and growth-oriented activities with caring adult mentors. Our summer programming includes partnering with UC San Diego Extended Studies to offer active STEM learning or pique their entrepreneurial spirit in hands-on activities led by local entrepreneurs, all while being with their peers. Internal summer program events are intentionally held outside of students\u2019 normal neighborhood, often outdoors, and promote critical thinking skills and teamwork outside the classroom. These activities intentionally build students\u2019 leadership skills, confidence, and resiliency to unfamiliar situations. Summer programming is a necessary bridge between school-year programming. Overall, Reality Changers\u2019 success is based on reliable and caring mentors providing consistent and engaging programming, including when school is not in session. Funding from this grant would directly support implementing program activities, excursions, transportation, and supplies.\n<\/p>\n
