Project Title: Closing the Nature Gap with HawkWatch International
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Despite Utah being home to some of the world’s most beautiful and iconic landscapes, many don\u2019t have the luxury of exploring them. HawkWatch International closes this \u201cnature gap\u201d with educational programs featuring live birds of prey for individuals experiencing economic, social, or physical barriers that prevent access to engaging experiences in nature. With support from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Famly Foundation, we will be able to close the nature gap for more learners free of charge. <\/p>\n
HawkWatch International (HWI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the environment through education, long-term monitoring, and scientific research on raptors as indicators of ecosystem health. We provide high-quality learning experiences to the public, with a focus on children of all ages. We do this through our team of trained educators and Raptor Ambassadors, live birds of prey that can no longer survive in the wild. Our program serves learners like Title I students, incarcerated youth, English language learners, refugees, families experiencing homelessness, and those with complex special education needs. For many, the highlight of our program is meeting a real raptor up close.<\/p>\n
Our program is unique in that it is entirely outreach-based, allowing us to meet children where they are. This preserves vital resources for schools, families, and organizations by saving the cost of travel offsite. Often, these children do not have opportunities to spend time in nature or at educational facilities like museums or zoos. This is why we prioritize programs that serve these audiences and make connecting with nature easier by bringing these experiences to them. <\/p>\n
A typical nature gap program includes a visit from 1-3 live raptor ambassadors and content aligned to state and national science standards. Our programs are informed by real-world data collected from HWI\u2019s scientists, connecting children to STEM careers taking place in their area.<\/p>\n
