Project Title: Somali Youth Leadership Project
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
New American Development Center (NADC) requests support for our work with Somali\/East African youth in Minneapolis to increase high school graduation rates and opportunities for our youth to thrive in Minnesota. Our youth programming includes leadership and entrepreneurship training, tutoring, and mentorship, designed around our community\u2019s experiences, beliefs, perspectives, languages, and customs.<\/p>\n
NADC was founded in 2008 to address the challenges facing the growing East African\/Somali immigrant population in the Twin Cities. Our mission is to lower the poverty rate of refugees, immigrants, and low-income Somali and East African community members through authentic, culturally appropriate, and sustainable programs that include entrepreneurship training, technical assistance, business development, home ownership, and advocacy.<\/p>\n
Our youth development programming aims to close the opportunity gap for Somali\/East African youth, including mentorship, tutoring, and youth entrepreneurship training. All of our programming is constituent-driven and responds to the needs of our community. In the past, NADC collaborated with DEED to establish a youth business incubator, facilitating six Somali youth to start up and co-own businesses. NADC also partnered with Abbot Northwestern Hospital to train Somali high school students to shadow doctors and nurses, volunteer at the front desk, and gain exposure to ICU units
\nCollectively, our youth programming aims to provide positive outlets, leadership development opportunities, and connections to caring adults, all delivered through culturally-responsive programming. These strategies are all protective factors against negative youth outcomes including poor academic performance, risky behavior, and mental health concerns. Further, our culturally-specific programming helps Somali\/East African youth connect with their home cultures and languages while preparing them to thrive in mainstream American culture.<\/p>\n
