Project Title: Provide advocates and mentors for children and youth in foster care
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
We seek an $8,000 grant from the Hermanowski Foundation to help bring critical court advocacy and mentoring services to approximately 200 children and youth in our community who are in the foster care system due to allegations of abuse and neglect. Funds will be dedicated to recruiting, screening, and training 30 new CASA Volunteers, as well as supervising the nearly 100 who are already active. It will also enable us to continue supporting older youth in our \u201cBridges to Success\u201d program, which helps ensure that young men and women are prepared to make successful transitions from foster care to independent adult lives that are safe, stable, and productive.<\/p>\n
Every day, Piedmont CASA works for justice in the very specific and complicated world of the child welfare system. Our CASA Volunteers stand by children the entire time they are in foster care. We are their voices in court. The justice we provide our kids ranges from obtaining proper medical care and educational support to reuniting them with their family when possible and, when it is not, helping them find safe and permanent homes. Research shows that kids with CASA Volunteers are more hopeful. And when kids have hope, outcomes improve. They have more academic success, enhanced well-being, increased self-control, positive social relationships, and optimism \u2013 tools they need to recover.\u00a0It is not surprising that research also shows CASA kids spend less time in foster care, receive more medical support, experience fewer out-of-home placements, and have improved educational performance.<\/p>\n
Piedmont CASA is not impeded by jurisdictional boundaries and we are able to stay with children throughout the life of a case. This ensures that even when social workers, foster parents, and schools change, CASA Volunteers do not \u2013 thus providing important continuity for the child. <\/p>\n

\nSources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Potential funding for FY25 includes DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice Services), VOCA (Victims of Crime Act), Albemarle County, City of Charlottesville, the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band, J&E Berkley Foundation, Inez Duff Bishop Charitable Trust, and the E. C. Wareheim Foundation. Individual donations comprise approximately 40% of our annual income, and events contribute another 4%.<\/p>\n
