The students participate in leadership skills training and then mentor and support English Language Learner 4th \u2013 5th graders.<br \/>\nThe mentors, by being positive role models, encourage mentees to share and discuss concerns and aspirations important to them. Mentors and mentees develop compassion and learn social responsibility, collaboration, and public speaking skills.<br \/>\nThis program is offered to Malden High School and Malden Catholic High students, with training for mentors in the fall. ELL students at local elementary schools participate between January and May.<br \/>\nYLMP creates significant results. Teen leaders report increased confidence and a boost in the sense of self-worth that grows from impacting others. They move from not feeling entirely a part of the culture of their families OR that of American students, to an understanding of how the American educational system works, their place in it, and opportunities for helping others navigate it successfully. Working together, mentors can better withstand both academic pressures and the negative impacts of anti-Asian sentiment in the wider culture. They use their voice to better themselves, their community, and their mentees.<br \/>\nMentees benefit from having an older student mentor who walks a similar life journey and understands their challenges and opportunities. They see possibilities that they, too, can become leaders, develop strength and confidence, and succeed.<br \/>\nCCC\u2019s Youth Leadership\/Mentorship Program (YLMP) enables high school students from Asian immigrant families to gain self-confidence, leadership skills, and an understanding of the value they can provide to others.
