Project Title: 2024 Super Summer Challenge
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The Super Summer Challenge provides a variety of benefits for members of the Salt Lake City community across all age groups. The Super Summer Challenge encourages life\u2011long reading habits and stimulates interest in the library and reading by motivating people of all ages to read for fun.
\nImportantly, the Challenge helps school-age children maintain their reading skills over the summer and prevents summer learning loss. It also encourages participants to explore their community, use their library and connect with family, friends and others. <\/p>\n
This program is available at all nine branches of the Salt Lake City system. <\/p>\n
The 2023 Challenge kept up with the overall upward trend of participation since the pandemic, beating the numbers for the year before. In 2023 we had 10,760 sign ups, 4,551 completions, and a 42.2% completion rate! Compare that with last summer\u2019s participation numbers of 10,453 sign ups, 3,388 completions and a 32.4% completion rate. Total sign ups in 2023 exceeded pre-pandemic levels. <\/p>\n
Adults and kids make up 70% of Challenge participants. Teens represent 18% of participants, and about 12% are pre-readers.<\/p>\n
We asked participants, \u201cwhat did you like most about the Super Summer Challenge?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u25cf \u201cThe librarians are always so helpful when I have questions. Your reading challenges help encourage me to read more and read new things!\u201d – Adult
\n\u25cf \u201cThat I could do it online and in person. I also loved the gamification of it all, because I have a hard time starting things\u201d – Adult
\n\u25cf \u201cStickers are nice, and being incentivized to read more.\u201d – Teen<\/p>\n
\u25cf \u201cThat I might win the grand prize.\u201d – Kid
\n\u25cf \u201cWe LOVE summer reading!! We\u2019ve especially loved coming to the classes. We obviously blew through summer reading, but plan on continuing the program throughout the summer even though we\u2019ve completed the challenge.\u201d – Caregiver <\/p>\n
