Project Title: New Clothes for Homeless & Low-Income Students
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The National Giving Alliance (NGA) provides new clothes to homeless and low-income youth. Students who have new clothes to wear are 70% more likely to attend school. Students who do not have appropriate clothes to wear are 7X more likely to miss school and not graduate high school. Students who do not have clothes that are age-, gender-, or seasonally appropriate, or are not the correct size tend to have 12 additional days absent from school. NGA works with school social workers and guidance counselors to give the students whose families are at or below the poverty line the clothes they need to attend school. We give them a week\u2019s worth of complete outfits, which are coordinated to be mixed and matched that are selected specifically for each student based on their age, grade level, clothing size and gender. Our goal is to give youth dignity with new clothes to allow them to go to school with self-confidence. We are removing one more barrier for them so that they may have an opportunity to succeed in school and life.<\/p>\n
The bottom line is that clothing insecurity is an ever-present problem that requires immediate action. Currently, there is not any funding for clothing from the federal, state or local government. We know clothing is a basic necessity. Lack of clothing not only exposes youth to potential health and safety risks, but it also makes them feel excluded, invisible, and undervalued among their peers, hindering their socialization and education. We believe that clothing is a basic human right and that every child is worthy of having clothes that make them feel confident and secure. Kids are facing these challenges every single day, and without adequate support, we risk holding back the full potential of the next generation.<\/p>\n
