Arts for Learning, Virginia became in 2023 the exclusive Coastal Virginia affiliate of the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts, the educational arm of the Wolf Trap Foundation for Performing Arts in Vienna, VA. This is an expansion of our service model to focus upon the youngest learners in underserved schools because of the alarming need to better prepare students. The Virginia Department of Education reports that 40% of Virginia\u2019s kindergarteners began the 2022-23 school year lacking adequate skills in literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills.<\/p>\n
The Wolf Trap (WT) model is unique because it focuses on the arts, using music, dance, storytelling, and theater to improve students’ literacy skills. Professional teaching artists on our roster are trained and credentialed in future-focused instructional techniques, developmentally appropriate early childhood standards, and engaging arts-integration strategies that reinforce targeted literacy skills. The model includes in-person classroom residencies, professional development, and family workshops. Independent research shows the WT approach results in higher standardized test scores, increased language development, and enhanced 21st-century skills.<\/p>\n
This grant will serve Coastal Virginia\u2019s youngest citizens by funding five high-quality five-session classroom residencies for preschool students and a two-hour professional development workshop led by WT artists open to any interested preschool educators. In the residencies, A4L teaching artists work in the classroom alongside teachers to engage students in arts-based learning experiences, slowly allowing the teacher to lead the lesson using these strategies. The teacher chooses the topic, and the artist builds the curriculum plan. After the residency, the teacher will have acquired skills to apply to current and future classes to further the success of their young students. Altogether, the Hermanowski Family Foundation is asked to fund 20% of the $24,895 total budget for the initiative.<\/p>\n
