Bright Spot Network is a national nonprofit supporting families navigating a parent\u2019s cancer diagnosis through opportunities for individual and familial healing and reconnection. Our programs range from tools to talk to kids about cancer, family connections through art, support groups for parents, groups for children and educational resources for parents. <\/p>\n
Bright Spot Network is requesting $10,000 to support our Bright Box art program. This popular program is free and provides meaningful moments of (re)connection and exploration for Bright Spot children. A Bright Box contains six simple art projects that have been designed for children who have a parent recovering from cancer treatment. These art projects keep children busy while a parent is resting, provide an easy activity that allows for quality time between a caregiver and child, and gives a sense of normalcy. As one parent explained, \u201cIn her own little world that felt out of control, [my daughter\u2019s Bright Box projects] gave her something of her own. The projects are still hanging proudly and she moved them occasionally to other spots in the house, telling me that what she created matters to her… It is so essential, this reminder that who you are and what you bring into the world still deeply matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
When a parent is undergoing cancer treatment, children are more likely to suffer from loneliness, isolation, and depression. With opportunities to find meaningful connections, those negative experiences decrease. Over 90% of Bright Box recipients told us that Bright Box increased or greatly increased their connection to their children. Our Bright Box program has grown from supporting 144 families in 2021 to almost 791 in 2023. We plan to distribute 1000 Bright Boxes in 2024. With the help of the Hermanowski Foundation we will be able to continue this growth.<\/p>\n
