Project Title: Promoting literacy levels for at-risk children with learning disabilities.

Project mission
\nThis project aims to promote literacy levels amongst students from economically poor backgrounds with learning disabilities (i.e. students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, central auditory processing disorder, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and ADD).<\/p>\n
Expected outcomes:
\ni.\tImproved literacy levels in language and math.
\nii.\tImproved self-esteem, self-confidence, and social skills.
\niii.\tImproved parent\u2019s participation in supporting their children\u2019s early literacy and learning needs<\/p>\n
Brief description of the project
\nStudies show that learning disabilities affect 20% of the US population (1 in 5), while in Louisiana,13% have been diagnosed with a learning disability.
\nThough students with learning disabilities are as smart as their peers and can achieve a high level with the right support, too often, they lack specialized support , and leave school with a certificate of completion, instead of a regular diploma, or drop out out altogether.
\nAdditionally, between 24% and 52% of children with learning disabilities also exhibit signs of behavior problems that may affect their performance. Though interested in learning, they struggle to behave appropriately when placed in a reading group with peers, throw tantrums when they become frustrated with reading or solving academic problems, skip school frequently, or drop out to avoid the challenges they face in school.
\nTo further its mission of promoting education, one of ACOH\u2019s programs focuses on empowering students with learning disabilities through literacy support and mentoring to improve their skills in reading and math, and social skills.
\nWe are therefore seeking funding to meet the cost of program supplies.<\/p>\n
Beneficiaries
\nThe direct beneficiaries of this program are 22 students with learning disabilities from Kenner, LA (Grades 4-6). These pupils are from Title 1 public schools in poor neighborhoods recommended by their teachers and parents.\n<\/p>\n
