Project Title: Music for Military Kids

We would love to add a music program to our free Operation Little Learners (OLL) "parent and me" program for military children ages 18 months – 5 years. This program is an interactive education program for parents and their children to enhance child development. Parents learn to be their child’s primary educator with tools to enhance child development and early learning. OLL promotes school-readiness. Children attend the program twice per week for 13 weeks. We currently provide 12 sessions per year throughout Hampton Roads. The program we have chosen is Music Together Vivo, a 12-week curriculum with one 45-minute class per week. Twelve sessions would cost $18,576 and funding provided by the Hermanoski Foundation would help offset this cost. The military lifestyle greatly affects children and often, not in a positive way. Frequent moves, deployments, leaving friends, etc., can cause emotional struggles. Music can soothe children\u2019s emotions and contribute to their general wellbeing. Children build social skills through instruments while improving their mood and building confidence. Children have an opportunity to engage in music along with their parent, aiding in parent-child bonding. Music can also decrease impulsive behavior, decrease irritability, and promote calm \u2013 all positive outcomes for the sometimes-chaotic life of a military child. This music program would greatly enhance benefits received by children participating in Operation Little Learners. <\/p>\n
