Integration Family Services (IFS) is a product of a culminating grassroots movement of Somali\/East African childcare providers, parents, and families seeking to establish a central network of resources and support. This non-profit strives to support the East African immigrant community in various ways. One program that we offer is our Youth Empowerment program. The youth who participate in our summer Youth Empowerment Program primarily come from lower-income immigrant\/minority populations. This 8-week program will empower youth to build the skills and confidence to reach their full potential and enact a positive change in their communities. The program is youth-led and assisted by an adult volunteer who works alongside youth to facilitate culturally specific topics weekly. This program will offer the following components: Safe youth space (a free and welcoming space for youth to build peer one-on-one connections); Workshops (culturally specific mental health and wellness workshops); life-building skills, conversations, and support around race and social justice issues. Resource connections (referrals to culturally responsive wraparound services for youth and their families). Youth Empowerment has taken a very effective and creative approach to our program model. Learning on a scaffolding model of leadership, staff works to incorporate youth voice and youth leadership in planning program activities. Valuing relationships and belonging are key cornerstones of the program. Our goal at the end of the program is that they will have made new connections, learned new life and leadership skills, and have access to community resources that will allow them to maintain stability and self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n
