Project Title: Building Home Libraries and Providing Virtual Reading Mentors for Low-Income Students
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Our Kids Read is looking to break cycles of poverty within under-served communities by creating a national, sustainable VIRTUAL reading program for 6-9 year old’s (administered via Microsoft Teams). By facilitating 1:1 remote reading programs and donating thousands of books to U.S. schools featuring Latino, African-American, Native-American and Southeast Asian characters to children in grades pre-K through 12th grade, we connect children and communities to diverse books and reading programs that foster literacy, achievement and a positive self-view. Over the past 18 months, Our Kids Read has served over 26,000 students.<\/p>\n
Our Kids Read supports two core programs: Free Book Festivals and 1:1 Reading Buddy programs. <\/p>\n
For the after school reading program pilots we\u2019ve run so far in Columbus, Ohio, Charlotte North Carolina and Harlem, NY we\u2019ve seen improvements in: Vocabulary, Reading proficiency and Engagement (96% student attendance). <\/p>\n
With the Free Book Festivals, OKR partners nationally with local organizations, authors and donors to bring thousands of books to K-5th grade students. We hire local storytellers and musicians to bring stories from around the world to life, then allow youth participants to pick 2-3 free books from our book tables of hundreds of books and up to 100 unique titles to choose from across all K-5th grade reading levels.<\/p>\n
With OKR\u2019s 1:1 Reading Buddy Program, OKR matches adult readers with children in the under-served communities we work with for virtual 1:1 mentoring and reading sessions (over Teams and Zoom). Each session is 45-minutes, once or twice per week for 12 weeks. Both mentorship and literacy are goals of the program.\n<\/p>\n
