Project Title: Foster Grandparent Program
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is a AmeriCorps SeniorCorps program that utilizes low-income adults ages 55 and older who have passed their criminal history background check and is passionate about education and children. FGP Volunteers provide mentoring and tutoring services to children who are behind either academically, behaviorally, or socially in their education. Foster Grandparents provide up to 15 hours per week of one to one tutoring or mentoring services to \u201cat-risk\u201d children who attend Daycares, In-home Daycares, or HeadStart programs located in low-income areas and services to children ages 5-18 in Title I schools located in Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, or Walker Counties. At-risk children are identified through educational\/social\/medical assessments and have been provided an Individualized Educational Plan(IEP). The IEP is used by the FGP volunteer that outlines their daily learning activities with the target child.
\nThe Foster Grandparent Volunteer can assist a child 2-5 years of age prepare for preschool and or Kindergarten by teaching social skills, daily living skills, and basic reading skills (ABC\u2019s, colors, writing). For children five (5) and older their tutoring and mentoring is designed to help the target child remediate and end the year on grade level prepared for the next year.
\nIn return for their services, the Foster Grandparent earns a tax-free stipend of $4.00\/hour and mileage\/meal reimbursement. This volunteer stipend does not interfere with any entitlement benefits the volunteer may receive making this a win\/win program for children and volunteers.
\nPositive Maturity has provided the Foster Grandparent Program since 1986 with a success rate of 87% of children served. <\/p>\n
