The Museum\u2019s comprehensive \u201cArt Matters\u201d initiative for school-aged children in South Florida consists of seven core components.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tSchool Tours
\nExperiential gallery tours of the Museum\u2019s collections and exhibitions. Supporting Next Generation Sunshine and Common Core State Standards, curriculum-connected tours engage and challenge students to build skills and achieve greater understanding of Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics through the visual arts.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tEducation Mornings
\nGrades K-12 are invited to participate in a two hour creative and stimulating experience. One portion is a studio workshop for students to create a work of art based on a selected theme. The other portion involves a docent guided tour investigating the theme in greater detail by looking at original works of art displayed in the Museum\u2019s galleries.<\/p>\n
\u2022\t$250 Field Trip Grants
\nGrant awards of $250 which help fund Museum excursions for K-12 schools in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties unable to cover the cost of transportation.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tTeacher In-Service
\nProfessional development workshops for K-12 school teachers centering on arts integration – the practice of using arts strategies to build skills and teach classroom subjects across different disciplines, including Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Utilizing artworks found in our Collection, a hands-on studio activity reinforces the ideas and strategies discussed. <\/p>\n
\u2022\tLesson Plans for Educators
\nOnline teaching aids for applying the visual arts across the curriculum, making it easy to bring art into the classroom. Each lesson focuses on an academic skill that correlates with Next Generation Sunshine State and Common Core State Standards. <\/p>\n
\u2022\tArt Classes for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
\nIn collaboration with FAU Center for Autism & Related Disabilities, the Museum\u2019s studio Art School offers special classes in creative expression for children on the autism spectrum. Through sensory-based visual art activities, students work to increase awareness of self and others; cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.<\/p>\n
\u2022\tOutreach for Children: Meet a Master, Create a Masterpiece
\nThis year-round afterschool outreach for underserved students from local area schools is provided to six non-profit social service agencies. The program consists of hands-on art activities, art history study, a Field Trip to the Museum, and free BMA passes for the children\u2019s families. <\/p>\n
