Back to Basics is entering its 40th year as a nonprofit. We operate the School Uniform and Angel Programs. We are requesting funding for our School Uniform Program. This program provides school uniforms to students, which enables them to start the school year in a new uniform. We realize that many of these families do not have access to laundry facilities, so the students really need more uniforms to get them through the week before they can be cleaned. (something most of us take for granted!) Moving the Uniform Program forward, our goal is to expand the 20,000 uniform distributions annually to 40,000 over the next 3 years, so the children can continue to feel good about going to school every day. <\/p>\n
This program focuses on a new uniform for the beginning of the school year in August. This initial expansion is targeted towards the seven elementary and one middle school located within the Glades communities of Palm Beach County. <\/p>\n
Growing our donor base to raise an additional $80,000 each year and sustaining these donations annually is a challenge, but one that will allow for the purchase of an additional 6,700 uniforms yearly to reach our goal of an additional 20,000 uniforms over the next 3 years.<\/p>\n
In 2023, there were 131,900 elementary and middle school students enrolled in PBC schools, of which 71,000 students qualified for free or reduced lunches. This is 54% of elementary and middle school children, and their families living at or below the poverty level. For these families, school clothing does not rise to the level of necessity. Our school uniform program meets this need by providing these students with the essential clothing that can afford them the opportunity to attend school with dignity and be ready to learn.<\/p>\n
