Project Title: Building Resiliency in Youth
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Building Resiliency in Youth utilizes the "I Can Problem Solve" (ICPS) curriculum which is an evidence-based, primary prevention program that offers practical skills for helping children, in a school setting, learn how to think through and resolve everyday conflicts. Through various activities, children learn interpersonal cognitive problem-solving skills, including the ability to (1) identify a problem, (2) recognize thoughts, feelings and motives that generate interpersonal problem situations, (3) generate alternative solutions to problems, and (4) consider the consequences for these solutions. ICPS is implemented through weekly lessons using games, role-playing, group discussion, and educational worksheets to teach children communication and problem-solving skills and the thought processes necessary for good decision-making.
\nThe proposed program will offer five hours per week of direct services at designated elementary or middle schools in Tempe. These direct hours will be spent delivering ICPS to students. Students identified as being \u201cat risk\u201d by the school staff will be referred to the EMPACT-SPC Prevention Specialist for small group support to focus on building resiliency and facilitating healthy coping skills. In addition, the Prevention Specialist will be available to the school counselor and classroom teachers as a resource for classroom management, classroom presentations, student intervention, and parent referrals. The proposed program will offer additional indirect services, which will be assigned for preparation time, phone consultation with staff, training, and supervision.
\nAs reported by the CDC (2022), childhood is a critical time for shaping long-term health, and approximately 50% of all mental health disorders start before the age of 14. Therefore, in order to support lifelong mental health, it is crucial, according to the CDC, to "to prevent problems, identify concerns early, and provide effective treatment.\u201d Therefore, the Building Resiliency in Youth life skills program has the opportunity to support mental health for children across the lifespan.\n<\/p>\n
