Colorism has been an issue in the African American culture since slavery with lighter skin being better than darker skin. This thinking has been passed down from generation to generation and affects young girls in different ways within American culture. Colorism starts at a young and impactful age for young girls at a time when they are figuring out who they are and where they belong in the world. This issue filters into adulthood; whether it’s the job she attains, the way she wears her hair, the business she starts, or the men she attracts. Colorism profoundly affects young children and their families due to how ingrained it is in communities of color. Colorism invokes many issues for young students, such as struggles with cultural identity, insecurity, and feelings of misrepresentation. Colorism has divided a culture of young black women that are stronger together than on their own. We are proud to partner with Higher Ground Neighborhood Development Group (HGDG) in several projects that support children and young adults in our community. In partnering with youth organizations, we are able to connect with the youth and provide access to art, culture, and education at no cost for the youth. Young people are experiencing unprecedented levels of disconnection from opportunity. In addition, early intervention is critical in helping youth lay strong foundations for healthy habits that improve success in adulthood.

Total Project Budget: 10,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Zellerbach Foundation, Revenue from other projects, Theatre Bay Area, Alameda County Arts Commision Arts

Project Duration: 4 months
Geographical Area Served: Bay Area (Oakland/San Francisco and surrounding cities)
Age Group To Be Served: 10-18

Contact Information

Contact Prefix (Mr,Mrs etc.): Mrs.
Contact First Name: Saleemah
Contact Last Name: Jones
Contact Title: Executive Director
Contact Phone: 8178002573
Contact Email: sjones@puturplayon.com

Hermanowski Family Foundation Initial Request Form Organization Name: Put Ur Play On Productions Foundation Legal Name (if Different): Also Known As: Put Ur Play On Productions Mailing Address: 2555 Longview Dr, City: San Leandro State: CA Postal Code: 94577 Main Phone: 8178002573 Main Fax: Organization Website: www.puturplayon.com Employer ID Number: Organization Tax Status: 501c3 Proposal […]

[3

post-3798","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-grants
["GET
