Concept
\nFor the academic year of 2025, the Student Global Ambassador Program (SGAP Leaders) and partner (The School of Engineering at Catholic University) will engage 500 ninth grade students from underserved schools (250 in-person from Maryland, and 250 virtually) to explore key issues related to climate solutions in their own communities and states. Over 6 weeks, high school students will be coached by trained facilitators (climate coaches) to prepare for the Sustainability Challenges – a competition to achieve net-zero carbon at USEC High School (fictitious high school). <\/p>\n
Content
\nOver 6 weeks, high school student groups will examine the Energy supply and demand side equation of their own school as it relates to transportation, food waste and electrical energy. <\/p>\n
In addition, students will hone presentation, research, collaboration and communication skills around climate change, renewable energy and climate injustice issues to prepare for the competition. Subject matter experts from climate fields will virtually share their expertise with student teams. Youth climate activists will virtually discuss their passion to impact climate change, and students will reinforce their learning by participating in multiplayer and single player trivia games.<\/p>\n
Broader Audience of Students:
\nWe will offer 4 identical Sustainability workshops targeting 9th & 10th graders from 10 schools in Maryland (Montgomery, Prince Georges, Baltimore, and Howard counties). Each school will provide 50 students. Two Sustainability Challenge workshops will be in- person and held at Catholic University School of Engineering in January 2025. Two workshops will be virtual and will be held in March 2025 for up to 125 students per workshop. Student participants will come from schools in New Jersey (Morris, Sommett, Bergen, Plainfield, Montclair counties, and the city of Newark). Pre-recorded and edited virtual coaching clinics will be shared via CANVAS to prepare those students for the March workshops. <\/p>\n
If awarded $8000, we would refine our virtual climate clinics by providing hands-on kits, asynchronous and synchronous training in climate-related careers, clean energy, and how to calculate one\u2019s carbon footprint.\n<\/p>\n
