Project Title: Building Resiliency in Youth: Youth Mental Health\/Substance Use Initiative
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The focus of this grant proposal is youth mental health and suicide prevention. Youth in Arizona are impacted by suicide, be it in families, at school, or in their own lives. As a community, we should be concerned about helping youth who are struggling with depression, anxiety, or suicidal ideation. Unfortunately, there is limited funding in Maricopa County to address youth mental health issues and suicide prevention. Up until recently, the mention of suicide carried a stigma with it; we now know that suicide can be prevented by talking about it, by studying its causes, and through early identification and referral. While focusing on the issue of youth mental health and suicide, this project also will address youth substance use since the two issues are related and both are identified as priority areas in Arizona. <\/p>\n
Building Resiliency in Youth: Youth Mental Health\/Substance Use Initiative will provide mental health\/substance use education to adolescents at schools and youth serving organizations, using the Signs of Suicide (SOS) curriculum which is an evidence-based program. Through one-hour classroom presentations, youth will be screened for depression \/suicide risk, as well as substance use, using a brief screening tool. In addition, they will view a video that educates them about the warning signs of depression and suicide in others and the dangers of substance use. With regards to early problem identification and referral, for those students who are deemed \u201cat-risk\u201d for suicide or substance abuse, a parent\/legal guardian will be contacted immediately, and a professional referral will be made. Parents\/guardians and school staff also will be trained to know the warning signs of suicide\/substance abuse and how to intervene.<\/p>\n
The main intent of this program is early identification and referral. By identifying youth at-risk and referring them to appropriate mental health services, we believe we can save lives.<\/p>\n
