Project Title: Empowering Youth in Underserved Communities
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Y.O.G.A. for Youth (YFY) is requesting funds to support our Empowering Youth in Underserved Communities project, which aims to address mental health and reduce incidents of violence in school and in the community. Research shows that young people who take weekly yoga classes experience significant improvements in psychological health, increased constructive coping behaviors, and decreased symptoms of stress and post-traumatic stress. These results ultimately empower students to make healthier decisions for themselves and their communities. Studies have also found that a yoga-based social-emotional wellness promotion program that includes yoga postures, breathing techniques, centering meditation, and lessons on social-emotional health improved emotion regulation, emotional arousal, and coping strategies in response to stress in urban youth (Frank, Bose, & Schrobenhauser-Clonan, 2014; Frank, Kohler, Peal, & Bose, 2017).<\/p>\n
YFY programs serve youth between the ages of 6 and 18. Nearly, 100% of the youth served qualify for free lunch programs. Of that number, 13% identify as African American and 87% as Latino\/Hispanic and 42% are male and 48% female.<\/p>\n
Funds will be used to cover the cost of teacher salaries, oversight and supplies. Through this project, YFY will equip young people, individually and collectively, with the tools to successfully manage life\u2019s challenges, facilitate positive communication, anger management, and increased self-control. Youth will gain: <\/p>\n
A greater sense of self-efficacy
\nIncreased stress resilience and coping skills
\nIncreased physical fitness
\nA working knowledge of simple yogic tools that can be practiced at home<\/p>\n
Sessions will be delivered by yoga instructors who have completed YFY\u2019s in-house 46-hour training course, in addition to a 200-hour training certificate from a Yoga Alliance accredited institution. <\/p>\n
