To ensure that each child has someone who will strenuously advocate on their behalf, Judges request a CASA Volunteer. They know how important it is for a child to have someone they can trust, someone who will stand by them for the entire time they are in the system, whether it is a matter of months or years.

CASA Volunteers are the only ones with access to everyone involved in a child’s case. They are uniquely able to conduct thorough investigations and present their research to the court in fact-based reports. Judges depend on these reports to make good decisions in the best interest of each child. In FY22, our court reports contained 427 recommendations. The court accepted 410, or 96%.

Through court reports and advocacy, CASA Volunteers restore safety, health, and stability to kids in foster care. The justice they provide ranges from obtaining proper medical care and educational support to reuniting them with their family when possible and, when it is not, helping them find safe, permanent homes.

Research shows that kids with CASA Volunteers are more hopeful. When kids have hope, outcomes improve. They have more academic success, enhanced well-being, increased self-control, positive social relationships, and optimism – tools they need to recover. It is not surprising that research also shows CASA kids spend less time in foster care, receive more medical support, experience fewer out-of-home placements, and have improved educational performance.

To meet the specific needs of older kids who are at risk of aging out unprepared, we developed Bridges to Success for Older Youth in Foster Care. Professional Bridges Coaches guide and mentor them in developing comprehensive plans for safely transitioning into self-sufficiency and independent living.

Total Project Budget: $1,013,029

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Potential grant funding for FY 2024 includes DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice Services), VOCA (Victims of Crime Act), Albemarle County, the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation, Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band, J&E Berkley Foundation, Inez Duff Bishop Charitable Trust, and the E.
