Project Title: Early Literacy Program for Two Schools in Oakland, California
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The mission of Yours Humanly is to provide children in need access to quality education and equitable resources. In the U.S., we fulfill our mission almost entirely through volunteer support, implemented through seven signature programs. Our project request, which falls under our Literacy Program, is for support to provide Family Literacy Kits to two Title 1 elementary schools in Oakland, California. <\/p>\n
Our Literacy Program addresses California\u2019s devastating literacy crisis. Of the 706 students of Allendale and Martin Luther King Jr. elementary schools in Oakland, 83% are not reading at grade level. Among their families, over 85% are economically disadvantaged; 95% are minorities; and many are new immigrants. These factors often impede age-critical literacy growth. Studies find that by Grade 3, children with significant literacy deficits are four times more likely to drop out of high school than peers with adequate reading skills. <\/p>\n
To combat Grade 3 literacy deficits, our project fosters family reading experiences for children in Grades K-2. Family Literacy Kits provide English-language and bilingual books, reading cubes, magnetic letters, and other tools that encourage parent engagement in their child\u2019s reading. Studies show that parents\u2019 literacy involvement can exceed the impact of classroom reading activity, making this project crucial to our work in Oakland.<\/p>\n
With your support, K-2 families at these two schools will benefit from at-home reading activity. The cost of providing the kits is $17,650. We kindly request a grant of $10,000. The remaining $7,650 will be funded by Yours Humanly through donations and funds raised at our annual Gift Of Schooling fundraiser. Each semester, a quantitative teacher assessment will measure desired outcomes in reading interest, reading skills, and communication skills overall. The Hermanowski Family Foundation will receive a detailed final report. <\/p>\n
