YES! (Your Economic Success!) is a unique program for each middle school grade level which consists of activities intended to help students gain an appreciation for the importance that economic, financial and career decisions will play in their lives as adults.<\/p>\n
As students transition into young adulthood, it is critical for them to be aware of the opportunities available to them, and to understand how the choices they make and the education they receive are connected to their future success. The JA YES! program is a \u00bd day of engagement, interaction and connection with volunteer mentors that help students explore how classroom learning relates to real-world careers, issues, and experiences. The program content is unique to each grade level, but the format of student groups rotating through a series of program sessions led by volunteers is consistent across grade levels. Each level of the JA YES! program includes work-readiness and life skills, as well as the value of education and training as concepts that are interwoven throughout the sessions. Students participate in activities highlighting different in-demand career clusters, including the trades, manufacturing, and engineering.<\/p>\n
There is a phenomenon in education known as the \u201cMiddle School Slump,\u201d a time when peer pressure and the transition out of elementary school prompt many students who were formerly good performers academically to begin losing interest in school. According to a study from the consulting firm the Bridgespan Group, this is also a time when JA\u2019s programs are particularly effective at engaging students, helping to illustrate to them the benefits of staying in school and the relevance to their futures. The Bridgespan study noted that the involvement of volunteers from the community in the classroom as part of the JA experience was particularly beneficial to students. We would appreciate the partnership of The Hermanowski Foundation.\n<\/p>\n
