General operations support allows Milwaukee Academy of Science (MAS) to continue the pursuit in closing the funding gap that exists. Per pupil funding from the Department of Public Instruction is significantly less for public charter schools. In fact, this school year (and since the MPS referendum was passed), independent charter schools receive $5,000 less per pupil than their MPS and suburban counterparts. For a school our size, this computes to more than $7 million dollars in revenue we do not have to invest in our classrooms. This deficit creates an issue with furthering the impact on MAS students in certain areas and programs. The gift received from the Hermanowski Foundation gathers district leaders to strategically think about how funding is allocated and disbursed while creatively thinking of innovative ways to continue the things that make MAS unique.<\/p>\n
