As one of the only education programs that have integrated academic counselors into school systems, TSUB focuses on 562 low-income students (9th through 12th grade) from Chula Vista Senior, San Ysidro, and Sweetwater high schools, all located within the Sweetwater Union High School District. The school demographic has more than 80% of its population being Hispanic/ESL students, and over 70% living below the federal poverty line with minimal parental support and resources. The data from the Department of Education reflects college enrollment in Sweetwater Union High School District is at 47.4% compared to the state average of 65.4%, and only 51.2% in Language Arts and 28.9% in Mathematics met the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) standard.

To begin improving equitable education opportunities, TSUB has increased student access academic counseling, college resources, and comprehensive core subject tutoring, while also providing fun and vibrant learning experiences through community-based enrichment activities. The four program components are:
1) Academic Advancement – provides students with tailored academic success plans/academic counseling alongside of daily core subject tutoring (including STEM subjects, humanities studies, and the arts) and bi-monthly boot camps for additional support.
2) Student Development/Enrichment Activities – organizes leadership and life skills workshops, guest speakers, and field trips (to museums, college tours, musicals, etc.) that foster student’s Social and Emotional Learning, creativity, and confidence inside and outside of the classroom setting.
3) College Preparation – host one-on-one college counseling, college application workshops, standardized testing preparation, and college preparatory courses.
4) Parent Academy – provide quarterly parent workshops and parent meetings to increase awareness of postsecondary education and improve parental support.

While the program has been tremendously successful in the last ten years, it is LSSSC’s strategic vision to increase program support and diversify program funding. With the requested funding of $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation, LSSSC aims to further expand our program effort to advance equitable education as we prepare for the 2023 – 24 academic year.

Total Project Budget: 595,531.84

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Department of Education ($552,530 – Committed); Las Patronas $20,000 (pending); John Krakauer Charitable Trust – $10,000 (pending)

Project Duration: 07/01/2023 to 06/30/2024
Geographical Area Served: Chula Vista, San Diego County, California
Age Group To Be Served: Youth age 13 to 18

Contact Information

Contact Prefix (Mr,Mrs etc.): Ms.
Contact First Name: Lori
Contact Last Name: Butler
Contact Title: Chief Development Officer
Contact Phone: 714-584-5642 ext. 1208
Contact Email: privategrants@lsssc.org

Hermanowski Family Foundation Initial Request Form Organization Name: Lutheran Social Services of Southern California Legal Name (if Different): Also Known As: LSSSC Mailing Address: 999 Town and Country Rd.
