The Foundation for Orange County Public Schools (FOCPS) has developed the Read2Succeed program to address the pre-reading and literacy skill deficits of disadvantaged kindergarten, first-, and second-grade students attending Orange County Public Schools (OCPS). Students without home libraries and limited reading experiences often enter school behind their more affluent peers, leading to discouragement and academic difficulties. The program aims to develop these essential pre-reading and literacy skills so that students can read on or above grade level by third grade. Read2Succeed collaborates with various community partners to secure and train volunteers who provide research-based supplemental help to students performing below grade level. Over 120 schools have signed up for Read2Succeed services this school year, indicating the urgent need for this program. Children’s access to quality child care, family education expectations, socio-economic levels, and racial\/ethnic disparities impact their readiness to read. The majority of schools served through the program are Title I schools, serving large populations of disadvantaged students. The tutoring services offered by Read2Succeed help prepare young developing readers to achieve grade-level proficiency when tested in third grade on the state assessment. This program aims to give students the confidence and reading skills necessary to succeed in school, while planting the seeds for a lifetime love of reading and school success.<\/p>\n
