Project Title: Caregiving Youth Project
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The first national research in the United States (US) on youth caregivers, reported in September 2005, shows that more than1.3 million children in the United States, ranging from age 8 to 18, care for ill or disabled parents, grandparents, siblings and other relatives. Fulfilling their dual role as students and caregivers is compromised by missing school or after school activities, an inability to complete homework and increased risk of dropping out of school to care for their care recipient. The Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) began in 2006 as the first program in the US to identify and support Caregiving Youth by utilizing a three-pronged integrated approach within the systems of healthcare, education and the community.
\nThe grant we seek is to continue the provision of effective interventions, services and educational tools that support the psychosocial, developmental, emotional and physical health and well-being of students who are also caregivers. Currently, the CYP works with Caregiving Youth who attend 35 middle and high schools in which it begins its in- school direct services. There are also students who receive support in 22 other schools which lack the in-school component.
\nIn addition to in-school Skills Building groups, Lunch and Learn sessions and individual supportive counseling, the AACY Family Specialists conduct home assessments to determine other needs in the home that can strengthen the family and reduce stress on the child. These services include but are not limited to respite, tutoring, mentorship, and special projects. Sponsored activities allow Caregiving Youth to meet peers from other schools and have time to have fun.
\nA major outcome of the CYP services over time includes an eight year high school graduation rate of 97.9% with most going on to post-secondary education or the military.<\/p>\n
