Westover School is an independent boarding and day school in Connecticut that serves 185 girls in grades 9-12 from 14 states and 14 countries. Westover\u2019s mission is to empower young women to lead lives of consequence. The school\u2019s core values of strength of character, women\u2019s empowerment, passion for learning, and community are fundamental characteristics of citizens who are dedicated to making a better world for those who come after us. <\/p>\n
Our WISE program supports Westover\u2019s mission by preparing young women to pursue science and engineering fields in college, areas in which women are typically underrepresented, and to become leaders in their chosen careers. <\/p>\n
WISE courses provide real-world application to the fields of science and engineering. Through student-centered, hands-on experiential learning, students gain the confidence to think critically and creatively in problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and documentation. In the last five years, over 70% of our WISE graduates have entered college intending to major in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. <\/p>\n
We are seeking funding to purchase an MDX-50 benchtop CNC mill. With this equipment, students will gain technical and industrial skills and learn industrial standards. This piece of equipment will be used in the classroom and after-school programming to help make building prototypes more efficient and give students exposure to higher forms of prototyping and manufacturing. Students will learn how to use this tool which is common in industry and higher education. <\/p>\n
New equipment would provide needed support to the program and the overall Westover curriculum. A focus of the department\u2019s strategic plan is to integrate WISE courses into all disciplines including English, history, science, and math. The upgraded equipment would provide a valuable resource to the entire school community. Fulfillment of this item would help the school, as a whole, evolve with the ever-changing landscape of education. <\/p>\n
