Project Title: Art is Good Medicine
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
Art is Good Medicine serves more than 500 cancer patients and their caregivers through our partnerships with ECU Health and the American Cancer Society\u2019s Hope Lodge. Our service is blind\u2014we knock on the doors of the hospitalized and invite them to engage in a 30 or 60-minute art activity that is designed to minimize stress, anxiety, create distractions from the symptoms of treatment, and otherwise promote healing.<\/p>\n
We deliver Art is Good Medicine at two locations. ECU Health (formerly Vidant Health) is the largest and most comprehensive facility of its kind in the rural, eastern portion of our state, serving 29 counties. We work specifically in the oncology, palliative and pediatric departments. The American Cancer Society McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge is a free \u201chome-away-from-home\u201d for advanced cancer patients and caregivers, supporting individuals who live greater than 40 miles away from treatment. <\/p>\n
Cancer doesn\u2019t discriminate. Accordingly, we serve everyone we encounter who is interested and able to engage with us. We offer service to children as young as eight years of age. Because of our partnership with the Hope Lodge, our service pool skews toward older, lower socioeconomic status patients. That said, we begin each week’s service at the Maynard Children’s Hospital, serving youth first.<\/p>\n
