The Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Auto Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia (ADAGP). Both organizations are comprised of the same members: new car dealerships in the five-county Philadelphia region. The ADAGP, established in 1904, is responsible for all industry-related activities, while the Foundation, established in 2003, spearheads all philanthropic giving. The mission of our Foundation is to enhance and enrich the lives of children and youth in the communities where our dealer members work and live.<\/p>\n
By federal standards, poverty is defined as a family of four living on an annual income below $27,750. The Philadelphia region suffers harsh winters, and the reality is that many children living in poverty do not have a warm winter coat. We have heard countless stories of children wearing only a sweatshirt or a caregiver\u2019s coat to school, or siblings alternating which days they go to school based on whose day it is to wear a single shared coat. We are also aware of parents who work two or three jobs just to put food on the table, making adequate winter clothing a seemingly unattainable luxury. Our New Coat Program is a relief valve. <\/p>\n
The mission of our New Coat Program is simple: provide brand-new winter coats to impoverished children in the five-county Philadelphia region. This is not a typical coat drive; we purchase and distribute brand-NEW winter coats. NEW is important because for a child who is used to hand-me-downs or going without, a new coat truly does supercharge their self-esteem. <\/p>\n
Our first year, 2008, we distributed nearly 18,000 brand-new winter coats, and the program has only gained momentum since. In the fall of 2021, we distributed 42,800 coats, which brought our total number of coats given to 516,444!\n<\/p>\n
