Project Title: Summer Youth Program
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
With support from the Foundation, the Center will add to our already existing community service programs for youth by establishing a two day summer program for high school students. The program will be open to 25 high school students on Long Island, identified by their district. The two day program would begin with an introduction to the law and legal system, followed by trial skills training and exercises. At the conclusion of the program, students would put their newly learned skills to the test with an intramural competition. While the overall program would be developed and supervised by a Hofstra faculty member, five Hofstra Law students would each lead small group workshops, giving each high school student individualized attention and creating opportunities for mentorship.<\/p>\n
While the New York State Bar Association does host a summer mock trial program for high school students, the program takes place in Lake George, New York. Transportation costs prohibit students from Hempstead and other impoverished communities on Long Island to participate. Programs exist in New York City as well but the Hofstra program would be the first available to students on Long Island.<\/p>\n
The first summer program would take place in 2013. The 2012-2013 academic year would be used for planning purposes, outreach to school districts, and marketing to students and parents. We would also need to train the five law student group leaders.\n<\/p>\n
