CityDance prioritizes under-resourced youth residing in cultural deserts. CityDance serves more than 1,500 students every year, 90% of whom are students of color. To extend TBT’s impact beyond the classroom, each student receives a dual language voucher to attend a Company production with a family member.

TBT’s CityDance increases access to the arts for at-risk youth through an after-school program that specifically serves under-resourced areas of the community. In Texas, America After 3PM’s survey found that 622,227 children are alone and unsupervised during after-school hours. Through funding from strategic partners like the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation, CityDance provides enriching programming to schools and students at no cost, which removes the financial barrier for families; 59% of parents surveyed by Afterschool Alliance indicated that programs are often too expensive and deters them from enrolling their child/children. Since CityDance takes place after school, the program minimizes students’ chances of engaging in potentially harmful/dangerous activities and serves as a valuable opportunity to educate and entertain at-risk youth through basic ballet movement exercises.

While social and physical activities for youth face severe limitations during the pandemic, nowhere is it felt more dramatically than in our under-resourced communities. The pandemic has only exacerbated learning efforts for underserved students, and it is more important than ever to explore innovative options to engage students physically, emotionally, and academically through creative activities. CityDance classes offer a solution to schools and educators to help bridge this learning gap and often serve as a student’s first engagement with classical music and dance.

Total Project Budget: $127,506

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Launched in 2005, as the premiere outreach program for TBT, CityDance attracts funding from a variety of foundations, corporations, and government agencies, ensuring the program’s continued success after expending funds from the Hermanowski Family Foundation.
