Project Title: JFS Richmond\u2019s Partnership for Behavioral Health in the East End
\nProject Description:<\/p>\n
The Partnership for Behavioral Health in the East End (PBHEE) is JFS\u2019 response to a dramatic disparity: almost every child living in the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) communities in the city\u2019s East End have faced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which are linked to chronic health conditions, mental illness, substance abuse, and even physical changes in a growing brain. One Community Health Worker (CHW) said in a focus group: \u201cIf you live here, you\u2019ve experienced trauma.\u201d
\nTrauma-informed mental healthcare for children, youth, and their family members can help mitigate the consequences of ACEs and strengthen children’s and families\u2019 resilience. But, financial, cultural, and institutional barriers prevent many low-income children from accessing the counseling services they need, and Richmond is a federally-designated Mental Health Professional Shortage Area.<\/p>\n
The PBHEE operates like a normal therapist\u2019s office, but without the long bus ride or the threat of being turned away because of issues with Medicaid. The program is already operating in its first location. Each RRHA community has a Resource Center in the neighborhood, staffed by a CHW, that hosts rotating health services. The CHWs are well-known and respected by community residents, and they schedule appointments, remind them about appointments, and solve issues with Medicaid enrollment. Clients, youth aged 5 \u2013 21 and their families, visit their community\u2019s Resource Center for counseling appointments. <\/p>\n
After an intake interview and in consultation with the family, the counselor develops a customized counseling plan for each child and\/or their family member in order to achieve goals including:
\n\u2022 Help children\/youth improve their relationships, feelings about themselves, and ability to deal with problems.
\n\u2022 Support the child\/youth by teaching skills to handle stress, manage their emotions, and tackle everyday challenges.
\n\u2022 Reduce the harmful effects of ACEs and prevent further ACEs through trauma-informed counseling tailored to youths\u2019 specific needs.\n<\/p>\n
