Project Title: After school literacy and Art and cultural program

There are over a hundred West African immigrant families on the west side of Detroit; they live in one of Detroit’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Most of those families suffer from financial hardship and struggle to get essentials for their children. In addition, limited education and language barriers prevent them from supporting their children and youth educationally and developmentally. Many elementary kids read under grade level, and high school students lack interest in continuing school. Many of them are dropping out before graduating from high school. The number of mental health issues is also dramatically increasing. In the past two years, the African immigrant community has experienced several cases of suicide, and all of them are in their early twenties. The above problems indicate the urgency of these services in this Detroit community.
\nMILESTONES
\nDetroit African Youth Development Organization has served over fifty families through our different programs. Currently, we help 40 school children daily in our after-school programs through our dedicated tutors and volunteers. On the weekends, we receive around 60 children for extracurricular support. We also offer mentorship to high school and college students in the community. Currently, we have access to a gym, and we are looking for a fund to kick off the sports program because there is no sports program for the youth or children in our community.
\nCurrent Programs<\/p>\n
Tutoring Program:
\nWe tutor students in different subjects, including reading and writing, science, and social studies.
\n\u2022 In our tutoring program currently, we have 60 students in total. The program runs from 3 to 6 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am to 1 pm Saturdays and Sundays.<\/p>\n
Youth mentoring program: The mentoring program fucus on psychological and
\neducational counseling.\n<\/p>\n
