We are committed to assisting parents to understand that birth to three is a critical time in the development of babies’ brains and regular repetition of activities such as talking, singing, and sharing books can have a huge impact on early childhood literacy. Through our innovative programs, we support parents in creating a learning environment for their children even before birth.

Our Books for Babies Prenatal Project and Newborn Project initiate the conversation about early childhood literacy with pregnant women, share the message at the hospital bedside to parents of newborns, provide free board books to children and offer early childhood literacy workshops for parents. And as the children grow older, families have access to free books through our collaborations with nearly 200 organizations across Connecticut.

We are requesting support for the Books for Babies Prenatal Project and Newborn Project, which provide new baby board books and early childhood literacy information to pregnant women and families of newborns through nine community health centers and 13 hospitals in Connecticut. Annually, the program serves approximately 1,500 pregnant women and 21,200 families of newborns.

Research has shown that parents, just through awareness about babies’ rapid brain growth during the first three years of their lives, make choices that further aid in nurturing their children’s development. Our programs help spread this awareness by sharing books and having conversations that are simple yet can have a profound impact on the lives of the children and the relationship between the children and the parents.

Total Project Budget: $411,605

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): 30,000+ Funded Seedlings Foundation. 5,000 Funded Community Foundation for Greater New Haven 7,500 Funded Ensworth Charitable Foundation 10,000 Funded The Gawlicki Foundation 3,400 Funded Foulds Family Foundation 20,000 Funded Fund for Greater Hartford 15,000 Funded Hartford Hospital Auxiliary 2,500 Funded International Paper 10,000 Funded Middlesex Hospital 3,000 Funded People’s United Community Foundation 10,000 Funded Pitney Bowes Literacy and Educ.
