The Missoula Boxing Club exists to leverage the appeal of competitive amateur boxing for the purpose of academic achievement, positive mentorship, and healthy citizenship of at-risk youth in northwest Montana. <\/p>\n
Books Before Bags
\nOur hallmark program is simple – we call it Books Before Bags. Our boxing club is FREE for kids, ages 9-19, but before they are allowed to hit the bags they have to first hit the books. 45-60 minutes of homework is required BEFORE they are allowed in the gym. Our facility’s Academic Center is equipped with tables, chairs and education tools – monitored by volunteer tutors who connect with students and provide academic assistance, as needed. Once a child’s homework is finished to the satisfaction of the tutor, they can head into the gym to train with the head boxing coach.
\nWe are a USA Boxing Registered Club, positioned to create champions in the ring, and champions in life – bringing hope, strong adult mentorship and ending whatever social ill has fostered the condition of "at-risk youth.\u201d Since opening our doors, we have had the pleasure of working with 159 kids in our first year, 2021!<\/p>\n
Requested Funding
\nOur hope, in applying for your grant and partnership with the Hermanowski Foundation, is to continue to provide a free program for students. While the majority of staff work as volunteers, we hope to maintain salary of our Head Coach position – a critical aspect of our program. Our current wage for this position is $17\/hour, but we would like to raise it this coming Fall. A grant of $9000 for the 2022-23 school year would allow us to offer almost $18\/hour. Our Academic Director position is already funded by a sizable grant to cover the entire salary.<\/p>\n
