The voice of our youth: \u00a0\u201cWe go to rural schools in coastal Maine, surrounded by shoreline on beautiful islands and the nearby mainland. Our forefathers’ used hoes and rollers to harvest and sell the soft-shell clam, Mya arenaria. Changes in our climate threaten those options. BUT protecting our coastline and its creatures – \u00a0becoming biologists, scientists, engineers, technicians, entrepreneurs or licensed aquaculturists, while serving as caretakers and stewards of the coast are options for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Downeast Institute (DEI) is able to provide that chance for the disadvantaged youth of rural, coastal Maine. Currently studying the growth and survival of marine species to promote the sustainability of the marine food resources, DEI’s education and science team works closely with the youth from local schools to promote an understanding of fishery ecology, the fundamentals of scientific research, the role research plays in fisheries management, and the development of aquaculture methods suitable to our marine habitat in a hands-on STEM program that teaches youth (their teachers, too) from pre-K through Grade 16.<\/p>\n
