Project Title: Hygiene Essentials for Low-Income Students

Giving the Basics’ School Nurse Closet Program distributes free personal hygiene supplies to low-income Kansas City area students. We launched the program in 2014 in response to calls from school nurses and counselors. They told us that many of their students had no way to wash their clothes or hair and were going without daily items like toothpaste and soap. As a result, these young people were being ostracized and bullied. They tended to sit at the back of the classroom and do everything they could to avoid being noticed. These students were reluctant to raise their hands, so their participation in class suffered. Too often, they skipped school altogether.
\nWhen families cannot afford daily essentials like toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, and deodorant, their young people deal with isolation and ridicule. Our School Program currently provides access to needed products to 160,474 students in 364 public, charter and parochial schools. No other agency in the region provides a similar service.\n<\/p>\n
